Interpretive research explores how people make sense of the world and how these meanings shape their actions. In this five-day online course, participants will learn the foundations of interpretive research and gain practical skills for developing research questions, designing interpretive studies, and evaluating interpretive research. The course covers key topics including interpretive research approaches, research design, quality standards, and methods for generating and analyzing qualitative data.

What Is This Course About?

Learning Goals

After the course students should be able to

  • Formulate interpretive research questions
  • Demonstrate knowledge on practical, ethical, and analytical concerns related to planning, doing, and presenting interpretive research
  • Account for, apply and critically assess different means of data generation in interpretive research
  • Account for, apply and critically assess different means of analysing data generated in interpretive research
  • Discuss and critically assess strengths and weaknesses of different interpretive approaches

  • 9:30-11: Online session and lecture
  • 11:30-12:30: Small group work
  • 13-14:30: Individual exercise
  • 14:30-15:30: Office hour on zoom


Who are Your Instructor?
Mathilde Cecchini is an associate professor at the Department of Political Science at the University of Southern Denmark. She specializes in interpretive research methods including ethnography, interpretive interviewing, discourse analysis and narrative analysis. She has previously taught PhD courses on these topics at KOMEX as well as at her home institution and at the MethodsNet summer school.
